Position description

Reporting to the Manager, Bookstore & Support Services, the High Speed Copier Technician is responsible for operating and maintaining all duplicating and finishing equipment as well as associated software interfaces (Velocity and EFI Scan Builder). This position focuses on coordinating and performing all types of duplication work, including copy, print jobs and finishing work resulting in quick turnaround, high quality work for faculty, employees, students and external customers.
 
All employees of Bookstore & Support Services are expected to assist others working in the department during the year. Other duties where assistance may be required include but are not limited to processing transactions at registers, processing & distribution of mail for the University and Students (i.e. covering rounds, processing incoming mail, releasing mail to students), processing ID鈥檚, general Bookstore merchandising and providing printing services. This cross-functional, team approach which requires extra skills be acquired and utilized when necessary to cover services the department provides to the University.

Position Responsibilities

Duplication Services

  • Work independently to plan and perform work in a timely and efficient manner with high quality output; accommodate special orders which could include working with suppliers or salespeople to assist in finding the most economical and practical solution.
  • Operate the highspeed digital copiers/printers to perform daily duplicating and finishing work as requested by internal & external customers with a computer interface using Velocity, and the EFI Scan Builder to direct decentralized printing from various applications to a centralized location. Provide make-ready documents for both hard copy and electronic data using tools in the Command WorkStation for printer dispersal and for imposition, page level editing like covers, chapters, tabs, interposing, etc.
  • Verify and advise on options, other alternatives and pricing for all duplicating and finishing work
  • Using EFI Scan Builder import and manipulate documents to incorporate all print commands such as masking, scanning and saving files in archives. Maintain an archived file for Bookstore course packages and lab manuals and other documents printed for employees and faculty.
  • Maintain and operate additional equipment including spiral and thermal binding machines, folder, cutter, booklet maker, jogger, shrink wrapper, button press & laminator.
  • Perform routine maintenance on copier and finishing equipment as directed by vendor technicians or as necessary; make service calls and trouble shoot problems with equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain minimal inventory of paper, card stock, specialty papers, binding and finishing supplies and toner for use in the department.
  • Identify new services and recommend improvements to all print, copy and finishing services.  Promote services to students and external clients to ensure revenue targets are met or exceeded.
  • Train and supervise other Bookstore and Support Services employees, casuals and in the use of duplicating and finishing equipment. Assign work as needed and ensure high quality control standards on all work and jobs produced by others.

Scantron Services

  • Provide statistical reports for exams and course evaluations for submission to faculty members.
  • Maintain security for all supplies, bundled used sheets and reports as per requirements of the Senate Teaching Committee.

Other Duties

  • Provide back up for reconciliation of daily cash register sales and deposits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications/skills

  • Two year post secondary programs with at least one year experience in a fast-paced duplicating print/copy shop environment
  • Experience in graphic design is considered an asset
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with proven excellent customer service skills
  • Strong organizational skills to multi-task working with numerous projects simultaneously
  • Highly focused attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and physically demanding work environment
  • Strong knowledge of or ability to learn MS Suite and various printing-related and other software systems, such as Colleague, ID Works, StarRez, MBS (Arc, Insite & POS)
  • Ability to lift heavy packages (up to 25 kgs)
  • Valid driver鈥檚 license
  • Ability to work flexible hours when necessary
